Unitarianism and the Wider Movement
About Unitarians
The roots of our faith are found in liberal Christianity, but we have broadened these out and we now seek inspiration from many religious and non-religious sources. We welcome to our services people of all faiths and of no faith, including – especially – those with questions and doubts.
What do Unitarians do in the world?
Unitarians have historically had an impact on social and political reform, far greater than our numbers would suggest. We have been pioneers in the fields of social justice and equality. We were the first denomination to ordain women as ministers and the first to ordain gay men and women. Unitarians continue to take a lead on championing the LGBTQ+ community, climate change awareness, and human rights.
Unitarianism is a Liberal Faith
Unitarians are heirs to a proud 400 year old history of religious dissent. We believe that each individual spiritual journey is unique.
“Our Unitarian Church offers a person the help and opportunity to develop the faith that is within. Not to find religion, to learn beliefs or to be given a faith, but to help a person live the faith that is meaningful to them.”
Rev Johanna (Jopie) Boeke
Retired Unitarian Minister
